Troubles in Hosta land
My hostas are under assault.
I've been battling something underground -- probably voles -- and above ground -- the ever-present slugs. Those are issues that I have won and lost over the years.
But there's something new happening.
I think something is chewing on the leaves -- but I haven't seen anything like squirrels or rabbits doing this. I haven't had rabbits in the yard for several years so that would be a new issue.
And the chewing is one thing... but what's with the almost-burned part? Does the leaf suffer cell damage beyond the munching? It's not sun stress as these hostas are in deep to full shade (the photo required a flash). Perhaps it wasn't watered enough, but I don't have the same damage on any of the other hostas in the vicinity.
The other oddity is that the attacks are largely on the Patriot/Minuteman hostas that I have -- not the blues, yellows or other variegated. The yellows seem to be favored by the voles. And the blues seem to be immune from everything.
So I'm watching more carefully now.

My hostas are looking just like the one in your photo but I assumed it was my clay soil and the stinking hot weather we've been having. The ones in half shade look much better. Hmmm.
Call your local cooperative extension to get an id on this problem. I have seen this on one of my hostas too, and plan to look it up during my next Master Gardener helpline shift. It looks like a kind of blight. Sunburn usually seems to fade the leaves overall, not like this.
Mine are looking the same!Edges dryed out.
I keep cutting off the leaves so the plant looks fresh again.I am thinking it may be due to the extremly DRY summer we are experiencing! I am watering and thought perhaps too much water.hummmm
Hope we an answer..groan NG
