The garden in August

I spent the weekend weeding. I had neglected the dreary aspect of gardening during the sweltering days in July and early August and now the weeds have run amock. I tore through about six barrels of weeds and still have plenty more.

The goldfinches have fallen in love with the black eyed Susans. They perch and nibble away at the seeds.

My friends, the garter snakes, are back. I came across at least two and possible three in the garden this weekend. I hadn't seen them since last year so it's nice to know they're around.

My neighbors wish I didn't have so many garter snakes! They do seem to congregate in my yard and in early spring if I turn over one of the rocks edging the front bed I can be guaranteed to see a nest of pencil-thin garter snakes.

I don't mind them, but they do eat my goldfish and it startles me to step out the front door and nearly step on a snake basking in the sun!
